Besides gaining a chance to see Japan, which is a lifetime opportunity for many of the participants, they bring their unique perspectives and local concerns/ practices to the table (and hence introducing their own cultures). With Gunter's guidance, the conference has a strong bias towards sustainable global environment --a difficult topic and the awareness is needed now more than ever! I personally hope that we can join force with engineers as well.

大阪北梅田

KMO 大阪北梅田の新開発project conceptを説明させていただきました。森ビル、東京の話もよく出たので懐かしかったです。皆さんの意見によると、人間の交流にしてはまだ「冷たい」感じですね。私もそう思います。設計とbusiness strategyとmarketingの結び方をもっと考えすべきです。いい機会なので、Starbucksとホテルlobby（または森ビル）の真似はもったいない。Thanks Cheuk Fung Tong for inviting me to the event!

東京都でこんなに大きいprojectは六本木ヒルズと東京Midtownの後にもうない。大阪はまだ梅田の発展があるですね。ただし、森ビル（又はApple）のような一人の強いleaderがなさそうですね。Decision making is (big conglomerate) consensus based. It's very typical Japanese! ちなみに、大阪で時々とんでもない大きい忘れてる都市空間を見ると特徴の一つだと思います。

一般の高層総合計画と違って、ちゃんと知識の交流場所を中心して計画してます。商業施設と大学の間に見たい存在ですね。

淀川：あんまり活用してない大きいな存在。

京都文化財補助金

今日、精華大で偶然に永松さんと会って色々話しました。彼は３年半をかけてやっと上賀茂神社の近くで数寄屋大工さんと組んで和風住宅改修ができました。彼は「京都文化財manager」という資格を持って、物件を調査して歴史に関するreportを書いて、図面を作って、市に改修・維持するために補助金を申請することができます。条件は５０年以上を建てた木など文化的または景観的に有形文化財及び有形民俗文化財保存事業。大体、古い家はかなり維持がかかるし、住みにくい部分もあります。

私たちの引っ越し先は条件が当たってるかも。H親方によって、絶対に変なこと(aluminum sashなど）はしないし、なんでもいい木を使って手作りで行くので。。。まさに「文化財保存」のその通り。いいえ、実は改修する部分は現存のものよりもっといい材料を使います。いわゆるこの改修は今の状態よりもっと文化財になる（数寄屋大工さんの手間＋銘木の活用）と私が思いますが。最初、この家を買うのは親は反対だった。古すぎて、魅力的な空間があるけど「お金の虫だ」と言われました。色々の心配が続いています。

この地域は景観保存指定地域で、杉林の谷の中で村のようです。町全体的に保存する価値が認められたそうです。

私にとって特に嬉しいことは歴史の調査でも建築家の仕事になるんだ。本・現場を調べて、report・図面を書いて、試験・面接を取って、それはただ学校のことじゃなくて現実にも左右する文化財の保存にも役を立つskillと言えば建築家の力にもなるですね。

古民家の他の部分は改修中ですけど、８畳の部屋は新しい畳を交換した後に使えます。未来は何か文化の交流空間に役に立てればいいですね！ここは夏の新緑と秋の紅葉が綺麗です。小河がすぐ近くで流れって、自然の音がいっぱい。

H親方がトイレを改修中です。洗面台は出来ました。トイレが出来たら楽になるですね…

都市の中心部と違って、この辺で一時的な無料駐車スペースは沢山あります。囲炉裏もあるし（竈もある）、大きいparty又は小さな教室（しかも和室）ができそう。

Toko furniture design

New designs of Seika architectural students (Hayama studio) on "furniture based on the concept of toko". The one below which uses removable blocks to make ad-hoc table is particularly interesting. Some students challenged on the issue of lighting too.

The design above illustrates a bench on a 1-tatami board that can also act as a table... although it would feel strange to eat off a bench as a table, in reality. In design, though, we are allowed think freely on boundary issues --that a table can also be a chair, etc. I also questioned about ignoring Japanese way of sitting ON the tatami --seiza, all together. There must be a reason that Japanese had insisted on living off the ground directly, although we all adopt the Western table and chairs now. It's something to think about. Why?

After this furniture making exercise, I'll introduce the design studio part. It's interesting to think about how to apply Japanese spatial concept and elements with new interpretations. 五月・二葉葵展 II

二葉葵展 II は上賀茂神社と新風館でご好評につき開催しました。このイベントは「１００年後の伝統産業を目指して」をテーマに職人さん達が二葉葵に関する作品を展示しました。今回、私にとって一番面白いことは小笠原さん（庭師）が提案した上賀茂神社の落葉によって非日常な都市空間を作りました。匂いはとてもよかったです。時間を経って割れた落葉がこんないい匂いするのは生まれてはじめた経験です。二番目面白いことは曲がった栃の銘木によって立礼の机をつくりました。木による作品の展示はとても効果的。三番目は銀猫さんが作った金属の二葉葵と思います。本物の自然を対立して、いい作品だと思います。さすがprofessional artist.　以上は個人的な意見です。皆さんの作品は毎年さらに上達になって、いいイベントになりました！

去年は葉っぱじゃなくで、暗い空間の中でいい音楽を流したのやり方が印象的でした。時々京都の伝統なお店で変な（古い外国映画の）音楽を聞いて、よくないだと思います。音楽も難しいですね。去年の上賀茂神社でイベントが終わった時に創作尺八の演奏もあってよかったです。

今回は市長さん来ていただいて凄い。沢山のご来場、ありがとうございます！

二葉葵展の幹事の皆様方お疲れさまでした。

We have hosted another Futaba-aoi exhibition event successfully. This time, besides hosting in Kamigamo Shrine, we also had a shop space in the heart of Kyoto.

The show was to showcase craftsmen's creative work based on the theme "Futaba-aoi" (a symbolic plant). The room was arranged as if in a shrine --with the leaves from Kamigamo Shrine, which cracked with fragrance as time went by. It was a great match with the fine wood tables, creating a "nature in city" feel.

2010年度京都精華大学建築学科作品集への原稿執筆依頼

学生による秋野不矩美術館のリサーチについてコメントをしました。

私も秋野不矩美術館に行きたいですね。せっかく正月に静岡浜松までに行ったけど、美術館までに行く機会がなかった。まだ今度。

秋野不矩美術館 Akino Fuku Museum, located in Shizuoka-ken Hamamatsu-shi, was
designed by Terunobu Fujimori and built in 1998. Terunobu Fujimori, a
leading historian of modern Japanese architecture, began to design his
own architecture in 1990. Since then, he has created a number of
original buildings unbound by previous forms or styles, offering
continual surprises to the world of architecture. A modern eccentric
with an architectural sensibility drawn from ancient Japanese
traditions, Terunobu Fujimori designs projects that are exercises in
playful experimentation and sophisticated craft.

Akino Fuku Museum building offers a distinctive exterior image with
huge mud wall, dead trunks growing through and the look of a medieval
Japanese wooden fortress. The students had gone from Kyoto to
Shizuoka to document the entry sequence of the museum and the interior
material and spatial designs. I have learnt from their video and
sketch that the museum is located in such a way that visitors would go
through an uprising slope through dense vegetation and a sequence of
light-dark-light, with the museum being revealed gradually in front as
the visitors walk up the main access.

The students had explained quite effectively through model and
presentation about the change of materials between rooms. Inspired by
the strong lines and colors of the renowned Nihonga painter Akino
Fuku, Fujimori created a hilltop edifice of stucco and wood that seems
part Rajasthan fortress, part Orissa mud house. Inside, visitors
remove their shoes and are invited to sit on the stone floors and gaze
at leisure upon the landscapes covering the cool earthen walls.

Haven’t a chance to visit this museum yet, I thank the students for
their vivid presentation sharing discoveries and thoughts on this
surreal and funky museum based on their visit. Their sharing had
offered the class an insight on how building techniques based on
handicraft tradition can turn a palette of natural materials into a
modern museum, stretching the visitors’ imagination and reconnecting
human with nature -aims that are particularly important in Japanese
design.

Architectural Studio at Macau USJ

生徒達は日本のお茶室とか日本建築とか何も知らなかったうちに三週間で随分勉強して、最後までに頑張りました。課題はマカオの議事亭前地で「茶室」を提案すること。議事亭前地は恐らくマカオで一番マカオらしい、人がいっぱいところで、どうやって外来文化の茶室を導入する色んな案を皆さんが考えました。大体、三つの方法があります。一つは露地の庭を調整して、二つの文化環境を調和する設計。新しいお庭を作って議事亭前地の現状を改善することでもできます。二つの案はお茶室自身が抽象化設計になる。三つの案は茶室と庭共に屋上に置く。
生徒達は皆見事に一つ方法によって発表までに頑張りました。

面白いことは誰でも精華大で一番人気の「地下になる」案を提案しなかった。

その方がいいだと思います。

3月17日私は"都市の混乱の中で実存主義"についての講演を行った。元々は、非常に精神的な最小限のスペースの設計（日本の茶室）に話題になっていたはずなんですけど。しかし、その前の週、大きな地震と津波の災害が日本で起こった。不幸なイベントは、又予測不可能な運命と人間位置などを思い出させてくれました。

On March 17 I gave a talk on "Existentialism in urban chaos". Originally it was only supposed to be a topic on the design of minimal yet highly spiritual space --the Japanese teahouse. Yet a week before that, disasters of earthquake and tsunami happened in Japan. The unfortunate series of events reminded us on how unpredictable human lives and positions are.

マカオは元ポルトガルの植民地です。幸いなことに、私は最後の前市長に会う機会があった。前市長ホセマルケス氏は、欧州研究所（IEEM）の社長になっていた。彼は中国とポルトガル語圏の国の間のブリッジを作成し続けています。マルケス氏の専門は政治、経済されていますが、彼はまた非常に建築やデザインに興味を持って、毎年広い視野を持つ国際会議を開催します。

Macau is a former Portugese colony. Luckily, I had the chance to meet the last and former mayor. Jose Marques had become the president of Institute of European Studies (IEEM), and he continues to create a bridge between China and Portuguese speaking countries. Mr. Marques' specialty is in politics and economics, but he is also highly interested in architecture and design, and hosted international conference that promotes broad-view thinking every year.

USJセントジョセフ大学は、英語での学習機会提供しています。これは、マカオに留学を希望する国際的な学生の間で人気があります。又、三月末から四月の初めの間に大学は持続可能な教育の会議を開催した。

University of St Joseph provides learning opportunity in English and is popular among international students who want to study in Macau. Between end of March and beginning of April, the university had also hosted a conference of sustainable education.

雪の日に現場視察

今日、雪の日にわざわざ現場に行きました。その辺はもっと雪があると思ったけど北区と左京区と同じぐらい寒さ＋雪ですね。屋根と柱補強の工事が進んでていい家になりそう。美しい物は不便の面があるけど…それは定律かな？と今日思いました。いい物を得るこそ、かなり犠牲面もあります。まだ青春がある時に頑張れなければあかんと思った。

This year I've made 2 versions of the New Year greeting card.
One was taken earlier in the year at Kodaiji.
Then, in November our friends Connie and Francis came from Hong Kong
and helped us take this picture on the right at Tofukuji.
Thanks to Francis that we fulfilled this year end's task in the last minute.

The Year of Tiger nengajyou was taken at the bench at Miho Museum,
by granny, and had won a small prize from the Japan Post Office.
The Year of Ox nengajyou was a picture that we acted as models for Monica
Studio near Kiyomizu Temple. Every year we had needed help in taking
family pic!! Thanks for helping.

During the year end we had joined X'mas parties with Colette, Fushida sensei, Kyojo and Chris. Then in New Year I'm lucky to be able to join Urasenke's Hatsugama again. And for the family we are spending New Year in Gifu --where H's parents are. We'll also go to (the warmer) Shizuoka for a family trip --although I had suggested Shirakawa-go. Two years ago I had suggested Koya-san and then the family ended up going to Fujikyu Highland. May be except foreigners, no Japanese would be interested to "suffer" in old Japanese style. Well.

I'm also looking forward to spending Chinese New Year (again) with Koun in Hong Kong during the beginning of February, then teaching an architectural studio in University of St. Joseph in Macau. It'll be my first time being able to stay in Macau for an extended time, and I am looking forward to it!

And I just got a car, besides H's Toyota Alphard. Excited about it. In terms of car, we always prefer sliding door and an easy to operate trunk space. The small size would fit Kyoto's narrow neighborhood better as well.

Daitokuji 大徳寺瑞峯院＋中村外二工務店

先日、英国からの建築家Sir Peter Cookご夫婦と精華大の才門先生と今井先生と一緒に大徳寺瑞峯院で見学しました。重森三鈴が作った庭園と待庵を写したお茶室は印象的。その後に住職の前田さんからお茶をいただいた。50年前にQueen Elizabeth 2ndが竜安寺で庭を見た姿、禅の呼吸と日本の小さな建築などのお話をしました。お茶室天井の銘木とその日の軸「無事」も面白かった！

実は2006年の冬にJR groupと前田さんの話を一度聞いた。その時はまだ日本語を分からなくて、今は前田さんの話を大分わかるようになった。自分にとっては不思議の感じです。

瓦下ろす unloading roof tiles

Bar at Pontocho 先斗町・佐曽羅

先斗町・佐曽羅は「景Art」のmembersが協力して作った新鋭な和modernのbarです。皆さんも茶室建築関係の若い職人さんので、茶室の雰囲気を大事にしてして出来上がりました。町中のbarなんですけど、露地＋床の間のような玄関が大変面白いです。飲み物も美味しいし、皆さんが先斗町に行く時に是非寄ってください。

トイレの前で置いた小さな松と銘木の板がとても可愛いです！

イギリス人建築家。1936年生まれ。1960年代に活躍した前衛建築家集団「アーキグラム」の中心メンバー。2002年アーキグラムのメンバーとして王立英国建築家協会(RIBA)ゴールドメダルを授与された。2007年にナイトの称号を取得した。

アーキグラム (Archigram)
1961年に結成し1970年代初頭にかけて活躍したイギリスの前衛建築家集団であり、彼らがロンドンで出版した同名の雑誌のこと。建築という枠を飛び越え、詩やグラフィック、アートを自由に行き来する個性的なビジュアルが話題となり、コラージュなどを多用した実験的なメディア作りとコンセプチュアルなアプローチは建築業界だけでなくポップカルチャーを愛する人々までもを強く刺激した。

手塚貴晴 (Takaharu Tezuka)

ピーター・クック（1936-）ら、6人の建築家がメンバーだったアーキグラムは、詩と建築、デザインなどの分野を自在に横断し、消費社会における新しい建築や都市の姿を、当時のSFコミックスや広告などのイメージを引用しながら、ポップなグラフィックやコラージュで表現しました。
巨大な都市に昆虫のような脚がついており、居住者が希望する場所へ移動する「ウォーキング・シティ」や、着脱可能な空間ユニットを集合住居やオフィス、店舗など多様な用途にあわせて組み立てた「プラグイン・シティ」など、彼らの奇抜なアイデアは『アーキグラム』誌上での実験に留まり、実際に施工されたものはありません。

しかし建築界のビートルズとも呼ばれる前衛的かつユーモアにあふれた姿勢はレム・コールハウスやザハ・ハディッドなどの建築家だけでなく、ポール・スミスなどのデザイナーにも影響を与えました。

Very excited to meet a member of Archigram, and Takaharu Tezuka... this kind meeting opportunity is only possible while I'm in academia... strangely and thankfully, in Kyoto. While Kyoto is not a hot business hub like Tokyo, I do have met (or missed) some interesting people here.

All the students are required to participate in Peter's 1-week studio "The Inhabited Garden". It will be a time to see whether my drawing class students will be able to DRAW.

Before Peter, Seika has had Michael Rotondi hosting another 1-week studio. That studio was about making a modern teahouse at a wild site inside Seika University.

The shop "Kawacho　河長" had started in Kyoto since 1751, and the young owner is creating something new out of the traditional craft of metal casting.

This small showroom double acts as an office and is just above existing storage and parking, south of Shijo Karasuma 四条烏丸.

On 12.12, we delivered a center-piece table made of 神代杉 jindai-sugi. Other craftsmen that we met in the futaba-aoi exhibition 二葉葵展 also contributed their creations.

古民家の改修 renovating an old Japanese house

これは新しい動線、収納空間、kitchenなどを考えたマイ設計なんですけど、コストが高すぎて無理になった。建築家の基本として「合理的な動線を考える」ことも現実的には「分かるけど出来ひん」の場合があるですね！Although I have thought about a new "line of movement" in the renovation of an old Japanese house, at the end because the cost will be too high, this scheme is only partially adopted.

この古民家で広い玄関、囲炉裏とおくどさんがあります。玄関と囲炉裏の間を中心して高い天井空間があって、両脇は（一応）二階の空間もあります。囲炉裏から煙を分隔するために別々の二階に行く階段が必要です。正式的には箪笥階段が必要だと思う…でも予算がない場合は仮に梯子でも問題解決かな？ In this old house, there is a spacious genkan (entry space), a irori (sunken hearth) and a very traditional earth kitchen, the "okudo-san". The central part of the house that has the genkan and irori has a high ceiling, and solid walls to separate smoke that comes from the irori to the rest of the rooms. Hence, on the 2 sides of the house, separate staircases to access the (small) 2/F are needed. In the long term, tansu-staircases are the most practical. Yet if there is a shortage of budget, I imagine that even ladders would work for the time being.

Demolition in process 古い天井と壁を解体中. The previous owner had not been using the irori (central hearth), and put in a false ceiling in the central space. Also, the traditional kitchen "okudo-san" was no longer used, and one can see a generic kitchen set up towards the right. Compared to generic apartments nowadays, this is a very generous living space that can easily houses a table and some chairs.

Yet we are hoping to reconstruct a new version of a irori that would include a table comfortable enough for elderlies and foreigners as well. In fact, most Japanese restaurants nowadays have to re-design to accommodate "foot space", rather than requiring the guests to kneel or sit with crossed legs on the floor. I'm thinking that with a irori, high ceiling and the proper room partitions, in-house BBQ would be possible especially in cold days. 囲炉裏で焼き鮎が出来たら素敵ですね！

八畳の部屋で一息。Taking a rest in the 8-tatami room, that has a tokonoma and display shelves. This room is open to view of greeneries through the engawa 縁側 towards south. A nice room for the family to hang out and to enjoy the sun.

These tools are the same one that was used in Asuka period --most Japanese carpenters have not experienced these. When fixing Horyuji, the miya-daiku insisted to use such tools rather than more modern and handy tools. It leaves a special texture on the columns of Horyu-ji in Nara. Now, the team is fixing Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto.

１１月初と言えば炉開き。茶人にとっては新しい一年の開始ですね！

久しぶりに露地を歩きました。いい気分です！

新しい家を設計する時にも、茶道の進め方と一緒に考えればいいですね！

待合＞露地＞茶室＞露地　という進め方は客にとっては最高です。

Robiraki in early November is considered New Year for tea people, with the taste of the year's new tea (harvested in May) and with the first use of the sunken hearth. Flowers at tokonoma also changed from the grassy type to the woody type. 椿 Camellia flowers are used all throughout the winter seasons.

I haven't walked on a roji (dewy path) for a long time, and I lost my way inside Urasenke.... Yet, while I walked and enjoyed the roji, I thought that a house sequence should be designed like a tea ceremony sequence too. That is, the guest will be asked to go out and enjoy the garden before going into a tearoom, or sharing a meal. That way, we get to reconnect with ourselves and nature.

In the past, I feel obliged to take pictures and videos for tea ceremony. Yet, bringing "metal" into a tearoom is basically forbidden. In the past, samurai had to leave their swords outside the tearoom. Nowadays, tea people would at least leave their watches and phones and accessories outside. Metal doesn't go well with the fragile ceramics and atmosphere. If one is not a professional photographer with a clear purpose, I'd suggest using one's brain and heart to capture the precious moments instead.

改めて「一期一会」の意味が分かりました。大切な人達と有意義な時間を過したいです。

The sukiya expert Kiyoshi Yasui, who was responsible for the renovation of Katsura Rikyu, just passed away. It came as a surprise since he was still actively lecturing at Seika University 2 months ago. After all, he is 85 years old and he passed away after suddenly getting sick. This made me realize that we should spend quality time with the people that we CARE. In other words, the "ichigo-ichie (one time one meeting)" spirit as expressed in tea ceremony.

左官中塗り仕上げ、下から上に... 結構大変ですけど少し慣れました。

this is a useful skill if we want to make/repair a Japanese mud wall. This mud is a specialty of the Kyoto region. Contrary to common belief, Japanese doesn't usually mix seaweed to make the wall looks consistent and green. Different colors represent mud from different regions. In general, towards East is darker and towards West is lighter.

中島麦　奈良展

中島麦さんの展覧会に行きました。面白いsketchがいっぱい！色使いが上手ですね。Mark Rothkoの色彩を思い出した。中島麦さん自身もMark Rothkoが大好きです。（ちなみに、Mark RothkoのNew Yorkの旧宅は今は裏千家の支部として使ってます。機会があれば行ってみてください。）

小さい茶室でもそのままに現代美術の展示galleryとして使える…　今日は又勉強になりました。Galleryというのは白い箱に限らない！

It's amazing that the artist chose to exhibit his work in a small Japanese tea room. It felt great and reminded me that gallery space doesn't always have to be a white box.

geometry and mass

These days, I kept thinking about what will be the assignment for my presentation class students at the end of the semester. I'm thinking of an assignment that force them to think and create "art that criticizes architectural space". As reference, I can think of Donald Judd, James Turrell... etc. All American artist movements that has relationship to "minimalism" and "earth art".

Interestingly, I have worked for architectural firms in NY that are highly related to these 2 streams of artists, and the boundaries between art and architecture, in the best cases, are UNCLEAR. Same goes for landscape design.

Yesterday, discussions of Naoshima 地中美術館 came up as a case study for 2nd year students... the interesting and unique thing about this museum is that it's designed (by Ando) only to house a few permanent arts --James Turell, Walter de Maria etc. Again, "minimalist" stuff. Ando's museum is designed to be an art itself too, with simple play of light and darkness. The whole museum is buried underground and nothing changes, hence, I think the whole thing can be called an "earth art" too.

Not coming from an art background, I'm attracted to these arts. However, I cannot help wonder why these are, again and again, termed "American art", or "true American artists" etc, by the American media and critics. Can these thoughts be carried somewhere else, after so many years since the 70's?

In any case, I intend to experiment on my Japanese students if they may come up with some ideas after looking at these arts. I'll also think of an exercise in class before the assignment.

For the past month, H had been thinking hard on designing a table for his friend. I had not given much help because I was confused by his designs. Being a skilled sukiya carpenter... it's hard to break the mold from all the peculiarities of the chashitsu. But then, as the friend didn't gave any restraint on the design, I now have a thought that we should just create something simple, but using the sukiya carpentry skill. This direction may have years to go between us... hope so.

Club Okitsu 桜橘庵 / 弘道館

8月25日、香港から帰った次の日に桜橘庵で色々な方と出会って、楽しく一夜を過しました。

In the evening of 8.25 I gave a small talk at Kyoto Club Okitsu, one day after I returned from Hong Kong. Mainly, I talked about my past works and the possible relation between traditional and modern Japanese designs.

The building where Club Okitsu is located in is also called 弘道館 Kodou-kan. It's an excellent old building built in 1835 which faced threats of redevelopment, and luckily got preserved by a group including the owner of the famous sweet shop Oimatsu 老松. On 8.29, H and I went again for a talk on 花街の行政 and took a better look at the building. I'm very glad to meet such a new group of friends.

As for my talk, I mentioned that Kyoto and Hong Kong and like 2 opposite cities: Hong Kong is fast paced, has a relatively short history of British rule for about 100 years, and the population density is about 100 times that of Kyoto (if we don't count the inhabitable mountains). Kyoto has a history longer than 1000 years... And then there is also Tokyo, where new projects and designs happened.

Earlier on 8.29, we celebrated Koun's 1st birthday with grandparents from Gifu. Our friend and chef 青池さん、お世話になりました！又素晴らしい料理をご馳走さまでした。

We also went to an exhibition of 寺田和仁先生 and his colleagues at 京都文化博物館. The name 行雲 was inspired by one of his works.

Looking at Terada and his teacher's works... I feel I would like to read more Chinese poems from Tang Dynasty. There are too many good literatures in the past, while mundane lives flow like bubbles in a river. For some reason I'm particularly moved by the old poem:

保育園の先生が結婚して退職します。彼女の記念のためにB5 imageを作りました。赤ちゃんの成長が速いけど、それ以上人事の変化がもっと速い場合もあるですね！

大学でも結婚退職の同僚がいます。彼女は日本から離れ、アメリカに行きます。

最近、日本人と結婚して嫁に来た香港人の友達も出来ました。元々はAustraliaで留学して、香港で建築家の仕事をしました。まだ地元に慣れてないです。

結婚って…女性としては大変な決定ですね！特に職業を持ってる人に。実家から離れる人も多いし。By definition 定義により、結婚は「実家から離れる」…　でも女性が変わらなければならない場合が昔から圧倒的な多いですね。日本の場合は名字まで変わらなければならないので古い条例も続けるので不思議！

新旧友達と会って、面白い依頼が来た。やる時間次第に。

一方、間もなく香港に行くので多くの友達と会えませんでした。秋にしましょう。

泉町の工事は順調です。構造補強が終わり、新しい地盤を造り最中です。

一つの面白い依頼はClub Okitsuで小さな交流会・講演をやります。香港から帰ったすぐに… 8月25日にします。内容は「伝統と新しい和風」についてです。何が「和」、何が伝統、そして繋ぐ、何ができる…　外国人建築家の視点から皆さんと探討して見ます。http://www.okitsu-kyoto.com/

もう一つは中国明清骨董に関する。大変素晴らしい物だと思う。

精華大では来週に今学期終わり、open juriesが行います。来学期、私が初めて一年生のdrawing担当になりますので…また準備しなければ行けませんです。

中村工務店のサイトdesign draftも終わり、今は親方が検討中です。

はんなり会のNPO化の話もあったけど。仕事・方向の統合が必要です。時間分配と健康管理ももっと上手にやりたいですね！

家族では、私がずっと風邪気味で… 国際言語・子育て・service精神・町内関係などの色々な面の検討が続けます。今日は子供が熱が出た…

京都では祇園祭が開催しました。今年は建築士試験共に参加しませんでした。

その代わりに居合道の稽古がはじまりました。8月下旬に京都テレビの番組に少しinterviewが出るかも。「一生涯やりたい」という発音が最初綺麗にできずに、もう一回録音させてもらいました。

泉町の工事は順調です！Interior demolitionがほぼ終わり。Thanks to Unoda construction team and the management of our 親方, Hacchan.

About design, there were a lot of arguments in the early phase due to the very limited budget, and even just between the 2 of us, we wanted different things. I imagined a new space of light and hence I would want better located openings (actually, I would have like to re-do the exterior but unfortunately it's both limited by budget and law.) H would like to have extra door and staircase from the garage... but, an extra staircase!? Staircase would take up an important space in the middle of the new addition and rendered the middle part of the house a dead zone, or a wide corridor. By eliminating the staircase, the middle zone can be a living room. As for the extra staircase, I wonder if we can do something like firemen. Koun will love it when he grows up.

Before these years, I have only lived in apartments and designing houses are either academic exercise or for very rich clients with unrestrained sites, like in Colorado, NY or California. (And the clients are men. They would care less about the exact functioning of a kitchen as long as a kitchen is there.)

In this case, we're dealing with tight space, tight budget and in an earthquake zone. But I'm happy with the new possibility there is.

「発想」＜＞「完成品」の間

今朝、突然に銘木机に関する設計の発想がありました。

それを考えると…「二葉葵group」の説明文は「手作り」の視点からじゃなくで、「文化を形にする」の視点の方がいいと思います。

「手作り」は現段階で一つの方法と思うけど、それを制限したら未来は多分困ります。
大事のものは、「手作り」か「設計」かによる「発想」だと思います。
私にとって「手作り」は「設計」の方法の一つです。ただ熟練の職人さんが作ったので、「試作品」がほぼ直接に「完成品」になっただけです。
（学生・設計士さんだったら"モデル"になりますけど。その中の発想も実現可能です。）
皆さんがもし余裕があったら、多分何回の試行も作ってみたいでしょう。いつも直接に「完成品」を作るわけではない。
良くなるのために、文化上の交流も必要になります。「発想」＜＞「完成品」の間で磨くが必要です。

文章を書くど、多分「文化を形にする」の高い視点を持つ方がいいと思います。
この組は職人さんが多いけど、職人さんに制限するわけがない。
職人さんも自分の分野だけで制作するわけではない。合同制作も可能です。
その交流ができれば、一つ大きい「存在の理由」だと思います。

発想を「形」に表現するためのイメージ、音楽、文章、絵なども一部分の発表にすればいいじゃない？

後はやっぱり国際的の交流は必要なんですね。
単なる「日本」を紹介するだけじゃなくで、外国からのいい影響、新しい材料なども作品で試行しましょう。
例えば、寺田さんの篆刻組はよく中国の影響と調査を忘れずに、作品は幅広く＋奥深くになりました。

以上を考えました。

いい建築は一つの「製品」

6月13日（日）、学生たちと一緒に奈良に行く途中で「火天の城」の映画を見ました。http://katen.jp/

Storyは安土城の築城に関するです。なかなか面白いです。要するに大工さんの技と情熱も格好よく映しました。将軍、侍、大工、女たち、杣頭…　纏めがいいです。七重の天主を支える親柱の材料となる檜は二尺五寸（約75cm）角の檜、樹齢にして2000年以上であった。銘木と建築の深い関連性もstoryの一部になりました。必要な木を手に入れるだけで人の命まで懸かりました。

それを2回目で見た私の感想は「いい建築は一つの製品だ」。

ということは、今殆どの建築は経済的な理由でcatalogより色々な製品を組み合わせた物です。

昔でも、今でも、いい建築は素材と人の手から作ったものです。

火天の城（と数奇屋）の場合は木の癖を合わせて適材適所で作った作品です。

有名な建築家の作品から見ると、prestressed steel & concrete, 特殊なplastic、和紙などを上手く利用して設計しましたものです。Form follows function.

普通の場合はよく考えればやっぱり"function follows form"ですね。

使えにくい動線、良くない通風、過大又は過小な空間、つまらない外観など。法律と経済の問題がよく設計を左右します。人の心も問題です。

逆に考えると、法律、経済、人の心などの因素が小さくなると、（いい）建築家はいい「製品」を作れるでしょう。建築からの「空間」、「余白」、body space、「限界」などの考え方がどこでも応用できますか？

突然にお父さんが大好きGianfranco Ferre（建築家＞fashion designer）のことを思い出した。

5月5日に下鴨神社で出会った友達Chris Rowthornさんと一緒に中村外二工務店に見学しました。

皆さんは元気でやってます！神工鬼斧の世界です。

工場で大工さん達はある名料亭の仕事をやってます。

人数は少ないので、多分一部分の人は別の現場に行きました。

興石（光と家具の部門）は相変わらず綺麗な商品が展示してます。

興石の工場では伊勢神宮遷宮の部品を製作中です。

大部時間がかかりました。一つの理由は写真の問題ですね！

もし私が写真を撮りに行っても、自信がないです。

まさに谷崎潤一郎が書いた「陰翳礼賛」の世界だ。

それを別に、まずは工務店の作品：お茶室などは普段に公開じゃない空間なんです。

そしたら、多分まず本のイメージによって先pageを作って、

「長期的」には写真を撮りに行きたいです。

いいお話「夢に日付を」Date your dream

香港でもある居食屋「和民」の渡邉美樹社長は日本で有名人です。昨夜、テレビでいい話をしました。The founder of restaurant "Watami" is a famous person in Japan. Last night he talked about his method about "dating your dream" on TV.

渡邉氏の座右の銘は「夢に日付を」だ。夢を憧れで終わらせず、夢を実現させる「日付」を設定する。その瞬間から夢は「目標」に高まり、具体的な行動が生まれるのだ。He said it's important to give an exact date to your dream and work towards that goal. If there is no date, or no actual action towards that dream, the dream would only remain a dream.

実際、渡邉氏は22歳で「24歳で社長になる」と宣言、見事に実現させた。最初に宣言した「日付」通り実現させている。

It's known that he studied accounting since he decided to set up his own company. But he had also worked odd jobs to specifically raise money and to learn about "treating the customer 最高の接客". All these jobs don't have an inner relationship to each other, but he was simply fulfilling his particular needs and getting the most out of the jobs --sometimes learning, sometimes money, sometimes customer relationship. It's different from just climbing the corporate ladder.

It makes me think --what do I need now? I know I need to improve my Japanese. But, how can I put a date to it? E.g. can I reach fluency after another year?　And how about, e.g. someone who wants to get marry? Can someone "schedule" to meet the right partner and walk down the aisle in another year?

Apparently there are unknowns and limits. But the point is, we need to WORK towards a goal. On TV, someone said he had written a "resume before death" --about what he would want to have done before he dies. That is another way to put it, but a bit more long-term.

Defining a boundary, even seemingly impossible at first, is an important step that we shouldn't avoid. There are quite a lot of management books in Japan that are different in style comparing to the US ones. E.g. "how to be a morning person 幸運を呼び寄せる朝の習慣", "talking styles between the smart and the dumb 頭がいい人、悪い人の話し方" .

Recently I had started learning Iaido 居合道 on Monday mornings and our grand master is over 80 years old. Unlike your usual grand parents over 70 or 80 who would usually have knee or spine problems, the grand master's movements are perfect and his mind and voice is clear. I've also seen the same healthy masters in chado --someone who is over 80 or 90 years old can look and chat like a 50. Learning sports with a good group is one way to keep healthy and hopeful. Discipline in the body is one thing, but an openness in heart is even more precious --and it can only happen when you're with the right group of people.

Last night we had also watched a TV program 「情熱大陸」 on Tadao Ando 安藤忠雄. ついに安藤先生も70歳近くです。It's a bit hard to believe that Ando is now nearly 70 years old since the image of him being a young boxer is always shown. He is still very active in pursuing projects in China and educating young architects etc. As for myself, memories of taekwondo or the times in Hong Kong or US is still definitive. It's hard to believe that time passed so fast and people changed so much... have to careful in planning while one is being absorbed into daily chores.

TV last night also talked about 福沢諭吉 briefly. Fukuzawa Yukichi was born as a low-ranking samurai and had a famous phrase, that "heaven didn't made someone higher than the rest, or lower than the rest"「天は人の上に人を造らず、人の下に人を造らず」. Turning another page, he continued writing "but why do we see rich and poor people on the street? The difference is in education."

Besides "dating your dream", I believe "keep learning" is very important too. We need to know how to apply what we learnt, and learn what can be applied.

泉町の工事も間近い

いよいよhome renovationも間近い。最近、Hの仲間関係でよく業者と会いました。予算は勿論最低限に抑えしか方法がないです。

「設計」の空間は経済と法律の厳しい制限で私にとってはあんまりないです。前の経験によって、あんまり予算がない室内の改装の場合は、悪いけど腕がいい大工さんに任せば現実的な唯一の選択だと思います。「設計」は話すだけぐらいに済みます。大体、今の家よりもっと空間を作るだけです。そしたら家族3人の生活はもっと楽になります。月々駐車代を支払うより同じ金額で銀行の借金に返済するのは賢いfinancial engineeringだね。

隣の小さい物件を買えるご縁も15年以上かかりましたね！争うの相手もいました。基本的に皆さんも駐車場が欲しいです。

建物は結構一般的なんですけど、用途変更の申請も法務院までに訴えました。勿論外壁、構造などはそんなに変われません。（私がずっと外壁を気になったけど。）それは京都／日本の現実ですね！

昨日の打ち合わせによって解体工事だけでも60万円がかかります…

岐阜の実家で杉の床板材を頼んで20万円がかかります。

最低限の改装代が300万円ぐらいがかかります。

せめて空間があれば生活はもっと楽になります。２畳の簡単なお茶室も欲しいですね！少しでも畳があれば、又新たな生活ができます。お茶室の用途を別に、日頃に子どものはいはい、着物の畳みなどもできます。

自然の太陽光、風などは私が一番気になります。One roomになると、何とかできるでしょう。

この事件より改めて「何でもお金が必要だ」の覚悟がありました。

精華大学建築の3，4回生と奈良見学に行きました。

最初に見に行った所は平城京跡でした。

大変な工事ですけど…結果はそそうだと思います。

I think the new construction reminds us the importance of historical building preservation... one cannot just rebuild something old. While the effort of rebuilding is respectful, I think it would be better if the new building is done in a decisively more abstract way: e.g. by not painting the wood, or just having the wooden frame structure. Less is more in this case.

Exhibition of works by craftsmen on the theme of "futaba-aoi" at Kamigamo Shrine. The plant Futaba-aoi is a symbol of love and was also used in Shogun Tokugawa's family crest. It holds a special place in both Kamigamo and Shimogamo Shrines in Kyoto.

その日、私が写真家として勤めていた。作品と展覧方法は前よりずっと進めました。神社の暗い空間の中で音楽の流れことも素敵な経験でした。唯一の不足は暗すぎで部分の作品は見えなくなりました（ちゃんと写真を撮ったけど。）でも、沢山の職人さんが集まって、大変忙しい日々の中で皆一緒に二葉葵の作品を作るのは有意義な事だ。個人的に新しい発想ができた上に、新しい合同制作もできるのはもう一層の発見だと思う。進むとかなり新しい日本文化発信の力ができそうです。

写真について、暗い場所で細部を撮れる技術は実は私も最近できたばかりです。きっかけはこれでした：

4月3日の夕方、保育園の入園式から帰ったと行雲ちゃんの写真を撮りたがった。暗い家の中でどうしても自然光の感じを写したかった。久しぶりにslideを撮る技のover-expose, under-exposeなどを実験して、やっとこんな写真を撮ったです。その後、色々の場所で実験して、漸く技術を把握しました。例えば、子どもが黒の服を着ると、白い服を着ると全然反対の問題になる。建物が大変眩しい日の中で、又は暗い雨の日の中で…別々の問題になります。いつも全自動なdigital camera又は携帯で撮ると感覚が無くなります。

神社の中で大変暗い場所で僅かな見えた細部の写真を撮るのは、せめてtelephoto lensと-2ぐらいのunder exposureが必要です。一般の場合は-2のunder exposureはそんなに使えませんですね！それも私が持ってる香港で買った10万円ぐらいの入門器材の限界なんです。

できれば…もっといいtelephoto lensとmacro lensも欲しいですね！香港で一度友達の使ったものを買う機会があったけど… お金を無駄なく持ってる器材をちゃんと限界まで使いたいので買いませんでした。でも、professionalだったらやっぱり色々なお道具と経験が必要ですね！
